Felix Kaputu is thankful for the little things in life, after spending months in a muddy, mosquito-infested prison cell.

Kaputu, who began teaching at Purchase College this school year, was jailed in 2005 for allegedly starting a political revolution and gaining the support of his students, while teaching in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Kaputu was placed at Purchase College through a program called Scholars at Risk, where schools hosts scholars threatened in their native countries.

Sister to Sister wellness event held in Tarrytown Sunday, Sep 23 2007

TARRYTOWN – Women of all ages attended the Sister to Sister International’s 13 Annual Health Symposium at the Westchester Marriott on Saturday.

Members of Sister to Sister, a nonprofit organization, and the community learned more about their health through guest panels, workshops and health screenings.

Guest speaker at the forum’s luncheon was Susan Taylor, editorial director of Essence Magazine. Other experts and guests included inspirational author Terrie Williams, state Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, former MTV Networks executive Teresa Kay-Aba Kennedy and Carla Harris, a managing director of Morgan Stanley.

7 arrested in $300G home invasion in Scarsdale Friday, Sep 7 2007

SCARSDALE — Police may have recovered only one black pearl earring from $300,000 worth of stolen jewelry and watches, but officials arrested seven suspects this week in connection with a home invasion robbery three months ago.

Pomona native writes of life driving NYC taxi in “Hack” Friday, Sep 7 2007

As a young child growing up in Pomona, Melissa Plaut had dreams of becoming a lawyer, a doctor and a rock star. But she never fathomed she would be a taxi driver in the hectic streets of New York City.

After holding down a string of unsuccessful corporate jobs, Plaut got her hack license and became a taxi driver at age 29. A year after becoming a “cabbie,” Plaut began to document her adventures on a blog, New York Hack, which received as many as 800 hits a day. The blog became the foundation for a book, “Hack: How I Stopped Worrying About What to Do with My Life and Started Driving a Yellow Cab.” (Villard, $21.95).

Peekskill woman travels to Cuba to become doctor Friday, Sep 7 2007

PEEKSKILL- Sitembile (Si-tim-bee-lay) Sales has known she wanted to become a doctor since working in a Bronx clinic while still a senior at Peekskill High School. Sales, 27, is now entering her fourth year of medical training at the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana, Cuba.

After completing her training, Sales plans to return to the states and work in an under-served community, such as the Mississippi Delta region affected by Hurricane Katrina where she attended Xavier University for undergraduate school. Read more about her schooling in Cuba in The Journal News.
